Itinerary

Day 01: Puerto Maldonado – Sandoval Lake

• Transfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the river port on the Madre de Dios River. A 25-minute journey down the river by motor canoe until a riverside trailhead to Sandoval Lake Lodge. A 2-mile (3,2-km) walk through secondary forest from the trail until a small canal to board a canoe and paddle 220 yards (201 m) through a flooded forest.
• After reaching the lake, transfer in catamaran to the lodge Sandoval. Lunch and brief rest. Visit the entire west end of the lake in catamaran to see the flock of red-bellied macaws. At night, search for the extremely rare black caimans.
• Return to lodge sandoval for a short video or slide presentation and dinner. For those with extra energy, guided night-walk into the forest behind the lodge. Overnight. (L-D).

Day 02: Sandoval Lake

• At pre-dawn, visit to the lake to see giant otters and over 40 species of birds, like the prehistoric-looking Hoatzins. Return to lodge for late breakfast, then walk into the tall virgin forest near the lake to see the wild Brazilian nut trees and a demonstration of how the hosts collect, open and commercialise them. Return to lodge for lunch, relax time (1 hour or so).
• Afterwards, visit the eastern part of the lake to see one or more of the 5 species of monkeys whom life nearby, specially the brown capuchin monkey and squirrel monkey. Return to lodge sandoval for a small natural history video or slide presentation and dinner.
• Then, a new search for black caimans or a short night walk through the primary forest. Return to lodge and overnight. (B–L-D).

Day 03: Sandoval Lake – Puerto Maldonado

• Early breakfast and near dawn final visit to the west end of the lake for a glimpse of the giant otters. Transfer motor canoe for 35 minutes return trip to Puerto Maldonado airport and get the fly to Cusco or Lima. (B).

Day 04: Sandoval Lake

• Dawn breakfast, cross the lake by catamaran and make a short walk into the interior of the Mauritia palm forest to see an impressive congregations of parrots, parakeets and macaws. Cross the lake and guided walk into the primary forest trail to see the local flora and fauna. Return to lodge for lunch and take an optional rest or an independent walk by the forest trails with trail map.
• Afterwards, in the afternoon visit the eastern end again in catamaran and experience a spectacular sunset or take a free time at the benches inside the forest perched above a clear running stream where you can see bathing hummingbirds.
• Return to lodge for dinner and take a final visit to the lake to look for the black caimans or a short night hike through the forest. Return to lodge and overnight. (B–L-D).
