immerse yourself in an in-depth luxury Amazon experience, in the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve in the most remote ecolodge in South America. Stay 4 nights at the Tambopata Research Center home of the Macaw Project and explore a variety of habitats which means different kinds of flora and fauna. Not to forget the huge macaw clay lick less than a kilometer from the lodge.

Itinerary

Day 1

  • Arrival and reception at the airport. Transfer to Puerto Maldonado continuing by Tambopata River Port, and the Native Community of Infierno. Box lunch.
  • Then, 45-minute journey from Tambopata river port to Posada Amazonas, arriving to the Community primary forest private reserve. Arrival and brief orientation.
  • 20-minute walk from Posada Amazonas to the 30-metre canopy tower. You will enjoy spectacular views of the vast forest. Opportuniy to observe toucans, parrots and macaws. Dinner.
  • Finally, Ecotourism project: presentation on the Infierno ecotourism project is available every night.
  • Overnight in Posada Amazonas. (BL-D).

Day 2

  • 30-minute walk from Refugio Amazonas to the 30-metre canopy tower. You will enjoy spectacular views of the vast forest extending towards Tambopata National Reserve. Opportuniy to observe toucans, macaws, etc. Breakfast.
  • Brazil nut trail and camp: Beautiful old growth patch of Brazil Nut forest that has been harvested, located few minutes hike from the lodge.
  • Refugio Amazonas to Tambopata Research Center. 4-hour and a half journey by boat from Refugio Amazonas lies the Tambopata Research Center. Then, 1-hour and a half boat journey, crossing the confluence with the Malinowski River. You will be able to observe capybaras, caiman, geese, macaws and other species.
  • Box lunch. Arrival and brief orientation.
  • Overlook Trail: 3 to 5-km hike to observe magnificent views of Tambopata. You will be able to see howler and dusky titi monkeys.
  • Dinner.
  • Macaw Project Lectures: You will learn about macaws, their feeding and breeding, theories for clay lick, amongst others.
  • Overnight in Tambopata Research Center. (B-BL-D).

Day 3

  • Macaw Clay Lick: On most clear mornings of the year, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank. Located fifty meters from the cliff, you will observe green-winged, scarlet and blue-and-gold macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. Breakfast.
  • Floodplain Trail: This 5-km trail covers the rainforest with immense trees. Amongst the figs, ceibas and shihuahuacos you will look for squirrel, brown capuchin, and spider monkeys as well as peccaries. Tambopata Research Center is located within this habitat. Lunch.
  • Pond Platform: 10 minutes upriver from the lodge is a tiny pond with a platform in the middle. It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as muscovy duck, sunbittern and hoatzin along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers and parakeets.
  • Dinner. Optional night walk.
  • Overnight in Tambopata Research Center. (B-L-D).

Day 4

  • Breakfast
  • Tambopata Research Center to Refugio Amazonas: A three and a half hour boat ride brings you to Refugio Amazonas.
  • Box Lunch.
  • Condenado Oxbow Lake – CONDEL: A forty minute hike will take you Condenado Lake. Opportunity to obseve hoatzins, caimans, otters and macaws.
  • Dinner.
  • Tambopata National Reserve Lecture.
  • Overnight in Refugio Amazonas. (B-BL-D).

Day 5

  • Breakfast.
  • Transfer by boat from Posada Amazonas to Tambopata River Port, then to Puerto Maldonado.
