The Lares Trek is an excellent alternative trek visiting isolated Andean communities. This Lares tour is designed for active people of all ages who want to have great moments in full contact with the nature and want to learn about the local villagers and the Inca civilization.

This great trek starts from Cusco – Peru, and you will visit remote high altitude villages. The conditions in the zone are harsh, and even though we will be camping in relative luxury with dining tent with tables and chairs, toilet tent, comfortable tents and air mattresses, the conditions are basic. There will be no opportunity to take shower but you can washing hands and face, and you should be prepared for extremely cold conditions. By the same time this trip has many beautiful views and nice encounters with the local people, so will most likely be the most memorable part of your trip to Peru.

Really it’s a unique experience, this trek combines outstanding views of the Peruvian mountains, unbelievable Andean landscapes of splendid natural surroundings, high mountain lagoons and wildlife, and after all this, from Ollantaytambo Town you will catch the train for finally reaching to the famous Inca City of Machu Picchu, which is a magnificent work of the Inca masons, where you will admire its magic and charm, and you will see its large old buildings, amazing agriculture terraces, temples, water fountains, all this wrapped of a great history, which actually make it recognized as a New World Wonder.

  • Day 04: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu

Itinerary

Day 01: Cusco – Calca – Lares Hot Springs – Wacawasi

  • You leave from Cusco early in the morning by private bus and travel through the Sacred Valley arriving to Lares Hot Springs and spend the morning soaking in the medicinal hot springs, after lunch you have two hours of trek to your campsite.

Day 02: Wacawasi – Epsaycocha

  • After continuing up through the valley, you arrive to the community of Wacawasi. People here produce some of the finest weavings in Peru. Here, you can observe their great skills and brilliant techniques in the fabrication of ponchos and other garments.
  • Passing the village you begin climbing up to Condor Pass at 4100m. From here, you catch a stunning view of the renowned Mount Veronica (5750m.)
  • Descending gently for about one hour, you come to the beautiful Epsaycocha Lake, your last campsite.

Day 03: Epsaycocha – Patacancha – Huylloc – Pumamarka – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes

  • Today your trail leads downhill to an overlook facing a wide valley. Descending into the valley, you eventually arrive to the community of Huylloc where you have lunch, from here it takes two hours to arrive to Pumamarka and enjoy the Inca terraces, finally you arrive to Ollantaytambo. Situated in a fertile river valley and sheltered by mammoth mountains, this ancient Inca village is considered one of the most important living museums in the world. This is a perfect place to appreciate the vast archaeological remains and a wide variety of flowers and birds species.
  • From here you take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes at 8:00 pm and spend the night there in a comfortable hostel.

Day 04: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu

  • After an early breakfast, you will trek up the hill to Machu Picchu, from here you begin your guided visit of the Sanctuary. Time to relax.
  • Then, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time to enjoy the town before you return to Ollanta station by train and transfer to Cusco. (B).

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING/CARRY

  • Backpack, with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek. T shirts, shorts and some warm clothes. Recommended max 6 kilos for your personal belongings.
  • Strong, comfortable footwear.
  • Sweater and jacket (something warm).
  • Water bottle and purification tablets (Micropur are recommended and can be bought in local pharmacies in Cusco).
  • Flashlight and batteries.
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun.
  • Sun block (sun protection cream), insect repellent.
  • Toiletries, towel and toilet paper.
  • Camera, plenty of film and spare batteries.
  • One complete change of clothing (you can afford to carry more changes of clothing if you hire a personal porter).
  • For cash, pls note that there are ATM machines in Aguas Calientes.
  • Optional: walking sticks or poles (rubber covers required).
